One of the Few Inoffensive Posts on Overheard in New York

Overheard in New York is not a blog for the faint in heart, but here’s a rare post that’s both inoffensive and about Japan.

Well, I thought it was inoffensive…

Girl on cell: And he's from Sweden, right? Well, yeah. I mean, I'm assuming since he said he speaks Swedish and all... which, honestly, I didn't know was a real language.

I kind of sympathize; every Swedish language student I've met seem to wish it wasn't.

But it gives lazy Norwegian and Danish students an easy way to fulfill their language study requirements, no?

No, actually; the languages are close enough to be utterly confusing, but not so close that you can avoid having to study grammar and vocabulary just like any language. Being able to understand much of the basics helps, of course but I think it's a wash, overall.
