If we want to be quite fair, nothing stops Iran from producing fuel for energy production. And the non-proliferation treaty has turned into a rather sad joke, what with Indian, Pakistani and Israeli flaunting of it in exchange for sweet trade deals (not to mention North Korea of course). The subject lesson really is "get the bomb and you get a trade deal".
Perhaps Sweden should resume its development too; it obviously pays dividends.
The NPT has been on life support for quite a while. It will only be a matter of decades before several Arab states, singly or jointly, will have their own nuclear program that takes them to the brink. Strategic ambiguity, at the minimum. And God forbid if South Korea decides to keep that plutonium program after it absorbs North Korea (barring the unlikely event that North Korea will have given it up on its own).
One of the great what-ifs in my mind is what would have happened if the US had listened to us and taken disarmament seriously, after the Cold War ended.
