The
Okinawa gubernatorial election was always going to be an uphill battle for the
LDP favorite, pro-Henoko relocation incumbent Hirokazu Nakaima. Today,
conservative anti-Henoko relocation candidate Takeshi Okinaga emerged the winner.
My guess is that work will move forward on the relocation anyway, albeit
against significant local resistance. But the rush to a snap election largely kept
the story out of the national media, and that’s of more consequence for now.
Prime
Minister Abe is one lucky man.
