America the Beautiful? Not So Fast, Says Pew Research

In English and Japanese for ESL/JSL folks. Got stuck in the editorial pipeline for weeks. I’ve graded myself on my Global Talk (sic) MIGA essays. If that also fails to appear ASAP, I’m posting it here. Stay tuned.

Now, back to work.

何で日本は gives "まだ男尊女卑なのか" as the first completion. "varför är Sverige" gives me "en demokrati" ("Why is Sweden" "a democracy").

Not a serious investigative tool of course, but slightly instructive nonetheless. I do hope that last one is asked in a spirit of historical curiosity, not as a statement of disapproval.

My “historical” answer is that the 男尊女卑 culture that the ruling class adopted fitted nicely into the trappings of the West European (read, British, German and French) culture that it imposed on the entire Japanese populace—you know, the modern nation state.

My “disapproval” answer is that the average (so-so income, so-so- personal charm) Japanese male must accept more housework—much more—if he wants to have children.
